Vitinha downplays significance of PSG’s narrow lead over Bayern

Vitinha believes Paris Saint-Germain’s one-goal lead over Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals is not significant.

The reigning European champions defeated Bayern Munich 5-4 on Tuesday at the Parc des Princes, making the second leg at the Allianz Arena still open.

Vitinha was of the opinion his team should have done more to protect their lead at 5-2 but acknowledged Bayern were difficult to contain.

“It was a fantastic match of football. We loved playing it and I think all football fans were happy to watch it,” the Portugal International told the club website.

“It’s true that it is very hard to play against this opponent, and I think they’d say the same thing about us. It’s also true that we were leading by three goals, so when you only win by one, you tell yourself you should have done more to maintain that lead.

“But that’s football, and it’s very hard to do that against Bayern. Fortunately we still have a one-goal lead, but that means nothing, as we saw this evening.

“Now we head to Munich with the same desire and, above all, the same aim: to play well and to win, like we always do.”

French defender, Lucas Hernandez, reacting to the result said: “I think for all the fans watching, the Parisians as well as Bayern, it was an exceptional match with incredible intensity, lots of chances and lots of goals.

“It was an unbelievable match with a victory in the end. But now we need to win the second leg in Munich. We know that we produced a special performance today.

“Even if it was tough, we got the win. Now we head there looking to play the same way, to attack and to win again.”

Ligue 1 focus next

PSG will turn their attention to hosting Lorient in Ligue 1 on Saturday before traveling to Munich for the second leg with Bayern.

They hold a six point lead over RC Lens after last Saturday’s 3-0 win away at Angers, and have four games to wrap up the season.
